Start with the definition

TikTok describes Product GMV Max ROI as non-LIVE GMV divided by advertising cost. Its attribution includes paid and organic orders for the products in an active campaign—even when the buyer did not engage with an ad. See TikTok’s performance measurement guidance and attribution explanation.

PRODUCT GMV MAX ROINon-LIVE GMV ÷ ad cost

Use the platform’s reported scope and definitions.

That makes the ratio useful for understanding the relationship between reported sales and advertising spend. It does not, on its own, isolate the sales caused by advertising or show the profit left after all costs.

Keep three questions separate

What did the platform report?
The GMV and advertising cost counted within the report’s scope, dates, and attribution rules.
What changed in the business?
Sales, product mix, promotions, returns, and the amount the business keeps after its costs.
What did advertising cause?
The additional outcome that would not have happened without advertising. A headline ratio alone cannot establish that counterfactual.

A simple example

Imagine two comparable review periods. The figures below are hypothetical.

An illustrative comparison, not client results
PeriodReported GMVAd spendROI
Earlier$20,000$4,0005.0×
Later$27,000$6,0004.5×

The ratio fell while reported sales increased. Neither fact is enough to call the change good or bad. The decision also depends on the cost of the products sold, the promotion behind the sales, whether the comparison is fair, and the business’s growth objective.

The $7,000 change in reported GMV should not automatically be described as $7,000 of incremental advertising revenue. Other factors may have contributed.

Make the comparison fair

Before comparing two reports, match the products, dates, time zone, currency, and metric definition. Check whether you are looking at a complete period. Record changes to promotions, pricing, availability, and campaign settings alongside the numbers.

TikTok notes that Data Compass and the Ads Dashboard can differ because of platform subsidies. It also distinguishes Product GMV Max ROI from the ROAS used in other ad formats. Reconcile those definitions before treating the figures as interchangeable. TikTok’s measurement guidance explains the differences.

End with a decision, not just a ratio

Use your review to write down three things: what you observed, what you think may explain it, and what evidence you need before taking action. Sometimes the next step is a campaign decision. Sometimes it is fixing a reporting mismatch or understanding a product issue first.

This field note focuses on Product GMV Max. LIVE GMV Max has different reporting context. Platform details were checked against the linked TikTok documentation on October 4, 2026; use your account’s current reporting definitions when applying them.
